My work with the figure is crucial to all aspects of my work.
Observational figure drawing and painting informs the abstract
dreamscapes that are my larger paintings. As an academic exercise,
observational figure drawing is unparalleled. If you can draw
the figure, you can draw anything. Over the years my work with the
figure has shifted slightly. When I began, I was very much
concerned with capturing an atmosphere and creating
an accurate rendering of the scene.
Today, that element is still a part of what I do but rather
than capturing an atmosphere, I seek to create one. Through
expressionistic rendering and mannered figures, I seek to
imply a sort of psychological “narrative” within the image.
These “narrative” works are very much about transcendence,
eroticism, impermanence, and the ways they interrelate and
relate to, the universal human experience. We are all a body;
a conscious bag of flesh. The body speaks to everyone.
